Reader questions leasing space for library
Re: The article "City finds fitting site for library (A-J, Oct. 9).
We recently learned that the city of Lubbock has rented the old national bookseller’s space for the Godeke Library. For five years, we will pay $17,250 per month. That is a total of over a million dollars, for rent, (not to mention renovation and upkeep) for a place that we will not even own once the five years is up. Is it really a sound decision for our cash-poor city to pay this much in rent? What about spending the same amount of money toward a facility that we, the taxpayers, will actually own someday, or using that money to renovate the old Godeke location, and allow someone else to rent this viable retail space. It seems that the landlord is the only one who will benefit from the current arrangement.
