Legalizing and Taxing Pot??

Excerpt From George's Bottom Line.October 25,2009

Not there yet, but the roundtable seemed to think that the legalization of marijuana is coming. John Podesta even suggested (in jest?) taxing marijuana could be a way to pay for health care. The times they are a-changin’.____(George's Bottom Line blog copy)

"Fatman" Wilson announces big state grant for CitiBus

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - NewsChannel 11 is learning more about a planned expansion to the Citibus Transfer Plaza in downtown Lubbock. The city just approved a grant from TxDOT last week. It will be used to design the expansion of the Greyhound terminal at the plaza. TxDOT awarded the city $93,750 for the project. The city's been in charge of Greyhound operations for just more than a year now. They took over in August of last year, and installed temporary storage and counter facilities. While the city takes care of the facility, they won't have to spend city money on the upgrades. "There is no city money in this at all. In fact, it's 100% funding, and this $93,750 is just the beginning. That's just to get the design started and start the drawings," Citibus General Manger John Wilson said.____(Ben Lawson/KCBD copy)
_____

"Fatman" John Wilson has announced that "state tax dollars" will be spent on the Greyhound/CitiBus facility that taxpayers got when Greyhound pulled out of the Lubbock market. CitiBus is a for-profit endeavor that is now getting both city subsidy and state subsidy so "Fatman" John Wilson can get his "big salary". CitiBus is not covered by Open Records Act so "Fatman" John Wilson's salary is secret. It's no secret it(his salary) would have to be substantial to maintain that "massive waisteline".

Reader questions leasing space for library
Re: The article "City finds fitting site for library (A-J, Oct. 9).

We recently learned that the city of Lubbock has rented the old national bookseller’s space for the Godeke Library. For five years, we will pay $17,250 per month. That is a total of over a million dollars, for rent, (not to mention renovation and upkeep) for a place that we will not even own once the five years is up. Is it really a sound decision for our cash-poor city to pay this much in rent? What about spending the same amount of money toward a facility that we, the taxpayers, will actually own someday, or using that money to renovate the old Godeke location, and allow someone else to rent this viable retail space. It seems that the landlord is the only one who will benefit from the current arrangement.
