Reduce city's debt load before adding new items by Stephen Cowan

Reprint of Letter To Editor of Lubbock AJ from November 1,2009

If the city of Lubbock is indeed $1 billion in debt, then nothing should be done, either water pads or fire stations, until at least one half of the debt is paid off and water from Lake Alan Henry is flowing into our system. The soccer fields, splash pads, etc., are nice items on a wish list, but not necessary at the present time.

STEPHEN COWAN
Lubbock,Texas

Editor's NOTE
Mr.Cowan is correct. Taxpayers must NOT vote to buy any unnecessary items on credit(bonds). Lubbock's sales tax revenue could fall off as the Obama Recession becomes common in Texas.
