Worse than Hoover by Noel Harris of Corpus Christi

Reprint of Letter To Editor of Corpus Christi Caller-Times from October 25,2009

When Warren G. Harding took office in 1921, he faced a much worse recession than the one we are in now, as the nation struggled to revert to a peacetime economy after a big war. He slashed spending, cut taxes and started the greatest economic boom the nation had ever seen. When John F. Kennedy took office in 1961, he copied Harding; when Ronald Reagan took office in 1981, he copied Kennedy. Both times a decade of prosperity resulted. When Herbert Hoover took office in 1929, he took a different approach: He increased taxes, increased spending, slapped a surtax on business profits — and started the Great Depression, 12 years of the worst misery in our nation’s history. Now Barack Obama has been in office nine months, and he seems bent on being 10 times worse than Hoover; he is succeeding admirably. Someone needs to sit him down with a history book and explain the hard parts. It didn’t work in 1929, it won’t work in 2009.

The "New Democrats" are as bad as Hoover's republicans if not worse.
