Dawson County Appraisal District caught in property appraisal gouging scam

LAMESA, TX (KCBD) - Would your life change much if your property taxes suddenly doubled or more than doubled? "We've gone up about 225 percent," says Lamesa hotel owner Roger Hayer. He says he was stunned when he recently got his tax appraisal. Newschannel 11 caught up with him at his tax appraisal protest hearing Wednesday morning in Lamesa. He argued that since his business and two others face a new competitor coming to town, now is not the time for any tax hike. "It's making it hard to survive because the revenue is not going to keep generating as it is," says Hayer. "We have a new property coming into town. And so a lot of these old facilities are facing threats, ya know." But this story has a happy ending Mr. Hayer and the other hotel owners. They won their protest. So, their taxable values in Lamesa will stay the same as last year.____(KCBD copy and screen capture)
